Neighborhood Watch program grows in Charbonneau

Many residents have expressed interest in the Neighborhood Watch program as a way to increase awareness and take preventive measures against a rise in property crime . Neighborhood Watch is a national program . For local information , do an internet search for Clackamas County Sheriff Neighborhood Watch . EPPS hosted two meetings for residents recently and there was good participation and a lot of enthusiasm .
The first meeting on March 15 was attended by over 50 residents who were introduced to the program by Emergency Preparedness and Public Safety Committee ( EPPS ) member Spencer Groshong , the Neighborhood Watch leader in Charbonneau . The discussion centered around the need for a Neighborhood Watch program and how it can work in a close-knit community to create a sense of security , well-being and reduction of fear of crime as neighbors will look out for each other .
The second meeting on April 20 was attended by over 50 residents who were interested in becoming Neighborhood Watch leaders . A featured guest speaker from the Clackamas County Sheriff ’ s Office , officer Sara McClurg , crime prevention coordinator , presented the benefits of a Neighborhood Watch program . She explained how the program will bring neighborhoods together , help reduce the risk of being a crime victim , aid in training to observe and be aware of suspicious and unusual behavior and how and where to report critical information that law enforcement needs to investigate . McClurg emphasized that Neighborhood Watch is not a vigilante force working outside the normal procedures of the local police or sheriff ’ s office but is a training tool to teach participants on how to

recognize suspicious activities and how to properly report them .
The next step is to organize Neighborhood Watch gatherings in each of our neighborhood HOA ’ s that will allow neighbors to better acquaint themselves with one another , which is critical to the program ’ s success . Neighborhood Watch signs will be posted throughout Charbonneau telling a criminal that you are not an easy target , they are being watched and steps have been taken to deter crime in your neighborhood . Law enforcement officers report that the signs posted in Neighborhood Watch communities have been very effective in deterring crime .
All but two of the Charbonneau neighborhood HOAs have Neighborhood Watch leaders who have stepped up and volunteered to help with organizing and establishing a program . They will be there for you once they have the literature and signage that is provided by the Clackamas County Sheriff ’ s Office . Due to county budget restrictions this may not be able to be fully implemented until later this summer but will be allocated to the HOAs on a first-come , first-serve basis .
To volunteer to help in your neighborhood or find a neighborhood watch captain , please contact your neighborhood HOA president or EPPS Captain . “ LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER ”
