There are exciting developments happening in Charbonneau

Hello Charbonneau residents and happy Fathers ’ Day to all the dads .
These are some exciting times in Charbonneau ! First , we had the grand
NEWBORE opening of the new Activity Center in April . I believe this building will serve as a real hub for resident gatherings and enjoyment long into the future . Hopefully , most of you have had a chance to walk through the building by now , but , if you haven ’ t , please drop in during business hours and take a tour . LUX is drawing people into the Village Center from both inside and outside of Charbonneau . A new charcuterie ( appetizers ) spot called Gather + Give has taken the old LUX space and should be open by now . The golf course restaurant , formerly called the Turn , and now renamed the Market Café at Charbonneau , will have better ambiance , an expanded dine-in and takeout menu , and will be open this month as well .
In other news , a master plan for Edith Green Park was introduced , and a twoweek comment period was opened for residents to make comments . A vote by the Board was scheduled to occur after the deadline for submission of this article . The tennis board also voted to cover both outdoor
courts to allow for four indoor tennis courts and four indoor pickleball courts and the CCC Board approved a motion to get bids for this project . The fitness center in the Activity Center has been a big success as approximately 250 people have signed up for the inaugural membership so far . The cost is $ 40 for six months . Expansion of the marina parking lot is moving ahead , as permit applications have been submitted to the city and we are awaiting the city ’ s response . A draft campus security plan will shortly be received from our security consultant and will undergo a review by our Emergency Preparedness and Public Safety Committee . Because of COV- ID , our first CCC sponsored 4th Friday event since January of 2019 took place on April 29 . We loved these gatherings when we moved here because it gave us the opportunity to meet so many fellow Charbonneau residents since they are always sold out . I know , that was actually the fifth Friday of April , but the Crab and Rib Feed had already been booked for the 22nd . Incidentally , the Crab and Rib feed was sold out as well and was a huge success . Thanks to all the Charbonneau residents who participated in putting on this wonderful event that featured great food , a fun evening and raising a lot of money for the Boys & Girls Aid .
The CCC annual meeting was held May 18 , followed by a Special Board meeting to elect officers for the 22-23 year . Due to article submission deadlines , I will have to report on the results of those meetings next month .
Well , I have to admit I was somewhat unnerved the other day when I visited my dad ’ s grave in Salem and my GPS blurted out “ You have reached your final destination .” As we age , we realize our health is really the most treasured possession we have . We have been through so much lately , so just have fun this summer .

Solo Sisters

By CANDY FERGUSON

COVID-19 has not yet gone away

The first time COVID-19 became personal to me was in April , 2020 . My older sister Terry , two months shy of turning 75 and living in a nursing
FERGUSON home in Connecticut , contracted the disease shortly after we learned it existed . Terry , like many nursing home patients , had preexisting conditions and succumbed to COVID five days later . No one in the family was allowed to visit her and her Celebration of Life was on Zoom .
The second time COVID-19 became personal to me was in April , 2022 . I was five days shy of turning 75 and had big plans to celebrate my birthday on the coast with all my kids and grandchildren when I contracted the disease . Fortunately in the two years between when Terry was sick and I tested positive , vaccines had been discovered and were readily available and a medicine , Paxlovid , was available for use for newly diagnosed patients . I had a very mild case thanks to modern medicine and , unlike my sister , survived .
There are many people in Charbonneau right now ( the first week in May ) who have tested positive for
COVID-19 . As a result , once again clubhouse activities are being cancelled . We cancelled the April event for Solo Sisters after several of us became sick . Since then , Boys & Girls Aid , CWA , CWGA and the Men ’ s Club , among others , have cancelled their May events . However , we remain positive and hopeful that life in Charbonneau will soon return to “ normal ”.
During my quarantine period a friend brought me a Michael Connelly book to read . It was written in 2020 and titled “ The Law of Innocence .” The story takes place in LA and is set in the first quarter of 2020 . A strange disease has been discovered in Wuhan , China and has slowly drifted across the ocean to California . The characters are just starting to wear masks , and the main character is incarcerated and is curious and concerned about the changes going on around him .
Remember how we felt back in early 2020 ? We thought COVID would only last a few weeks . I ’ ve been keeping a spreadsheet , charting the progress of COVID-19 . On March 23 , 2020 Oregon went into lockdown , 10 days after California did . Reading this book has brought all of this back to me and it has made me think about my family members who have had this disease .
My brother , Catch , is 73 and lives in Connecticut . I certainly hope COV- ID-19 is long gone by the time he is due to turn 75 in 2024 ! I don ’ t need this disease to become personal to me again .
Take care of yourselves and please wear a mask when in a crowd . COVID isn ’ t gone yet !
