Wilsonville Library

The library is busy with fun events during the summer

Hello Wilsonville Library fans !
It ’ s nearly July , and I guess that means that summer has nearly arrived . So has it stopped raining
MARTIN yet ? Here at the big library , we have a giant roof that protects us from the unrestrained fury of nature in all its guises . Come on in and join us beneath it for some of the many exciting events happening this month — the peak month of the Summer Reading Program ! Read for 20 minutes a day , for 20 days , and , in addition to winning the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children , you can also snag fantabulous prizes ! There ’ s a science log for kids as well ! Please come and see our Summer Reading events ( for adults , teens and kids ), about which more anon .
This month , starting right at the beginning , on Friday , July 1 , we present our First Friday Film . This month ’ s film ( a comedy ) will be about a dog or , more specifically , an Army Ranger who is tasked with escorting the military dog of his fallen
friend to his funeral . Wow ! That sure sounds funny ! (???) Join us for free snacks and lots of fun . Remember to bring a pillow if your back doesn ’ t like our kind of unforgiving plastic chairs .
We ’ ll be closed on Monday , July 4 in celebration of Independence Day . Two-hundred-and-forty-six years of American independence so far , but please don ’ t take it for granted . Here ’ s to hoping you can celebrate with joy and family !
Hooray . Another blossom of past library service is blooming anew this month . Jared , from the Oregon ’ s Department of Human Services , will be spending a couple of hours in the library from 10 a . m . to noon on Tuesdays , July 5 , 12 , 19 and 26 . He ’ ll be available for drop-in appointments , and can help with advice ( and maybe more ) on family assistance needs — benefits for food , rent , childcare and other problems that may befall you or someone you know in these difficult economic times .
At nearly the same time , Toddler and Baby Time is happening ( at the nearby Boozier Barn ) every Tuesday this month at 10 a . m . Join Jo , Brad , and the crew for songs and stories guaranteed to prevent even the most jaded and blasé toddlers from succumbing to ennui .
Now let ’ s leave Tuesdays behind , and talk about ... Wednesdays ! Wednesdays , too , will be exciting in July , bringing a plethora of librarysponsored events ! For the elementary school set , it ’ s Camp Science , presented 11 a . m . and 1 p . m . Wednesdays , July 6 , 13 , 20 , and 27 . On the
patio outside the Children ’ s Room ( if it ’ s not RAINING !) our youth librarians will present table top science activities and a pop-up science demo .
Also at 11 a . m . Wednesday , July 6 , we have the latest in our PRO- FILES lecture series . Join ( still via Zoom , alas ) Dr . Bill Thierfelder for Part 3 of Our Solar System . In the final segment of this three-part program , we explore the mysterious outer reaches of our solar system — from the numberless dwarf planets and asteroids of the Kuiper Belt to the comets of the Oort Cloud . Just sign up online at our website to receive the Zoom meeting code .
We dare not forget the teens ! At 2 p . m . on Wednesdays in July , teens in grades 6 through 12 can join Brad for fun adventures that change each week ! The lineup includes a scavenger hunt July 6 , Green Teen July 13 , a Flash Fiction Writing Workshop July 20 and Bob Ross Paint Day July 27 . Find out more about these events on our website .
On Saturday , June 16 , from 11 a . m . to 12:30 p . m ., join us ( In person ! At the library !) for a free Space Talk , about the James Webb Telescope - NASA ’ s premier astrophysics observatory for the next decade . The JWST ’ s mirror alone is six times larger than Hubble ’ s ! The Webb will study every phase in the history of our universe . See what it has taken to build , launch , deploy to orbit and commission the four amazing instruments onboard this
truly amazing telescope . And see some of the first pictures sent back from orbit ! The Talk will be presented by Donn Anderson , a docent at Evergreen Aviation and Space
Museum . And , if Tuesdays and Wednesdays aren ’ t full enough this month , how about Thursdays ? Every Thursday in July , at 11 a . m ., we have our traditional Summer Reading Fun Shows . Please take note — These will be located in the Forest Shelter in Memorial Park , across the street ( and down the hill ) from the library .
Will Hornyak starts things off on Thursday , July 7 . The power of storytelling is never more clearly on display than when Will begins to speak , engaging the attention of even the ‘ fidgetiest ’ of kids .
On July 14 ( again at 11 a . m .) Curt Carlyle takes the stage ! It ’ s the return of The Curt Show ! Juggling only begins to describe Curt ’ s many circus art talents . Come and see a real performer !
On Thursday , July 21 we present Red Yarn ! It ’ s a whole production ... puppets , music , and theater . You ’ ll never want to miss out on a Red Yarn show !
And finally , on Thursday , July 28 , it ’ s the perennial favorite — Reptile Man ! The legend returns , bringing his scaly friends back for another wild , wonderful visit !
July has us all excited here at the library . We hope to see you around too . By the way — please don ’ t forget we have books , too !
