The holistic approach to wellness and ‘ Power of We ’ fuels residents

An estimated 188.9 million adult Americans committed to making a lifestyle change in 2021 . But , unfortunately , a study found only 8 % were successful . At SpringRidge at Charbonneau , residents praise the active retirement community ’ s holistic approach to health and wellness and the “ Power of We ” with providing the inspiration and motivation to keep their New Year ’ s resolutions .
“ There are such wonderful programs offered at SpringRidge ,” said Lin Loen . “ Best of all , the fitness classes are designed for all fitness levels so there is something for everyone .”
Among Lin ’ s favorite classes is creative yoga dance , which incorporates music and movement to improve stamina , flexibility and range of motion .
“ I get so many physical benefits while having a good time ,” she added . “ I really like the connection of the music and movement .”
The class is led by SpringRidge ’ s Wellness Coordinator Leslie James , an Athletics and Fitness Association of America ( AAFA ) certified instructor . She also holds certification in chair yoga dance and is a StrongerU senior fitness instructor .
“ I joined SpringRidge in 2015 in the sales department , while teaching group fitness at a local gym as a hobby . After I retired from my position at SpringRidge , I began to miss being of service to others ,” explained Leslie . “ When I learned of the opening for the wellness coordinator position , I knew it was an opportunity to combine two of my passions .”
Leslie has developed a well-rounded , preventative approach to health and wellness . It incorporates Zest , SRG ’ s program for wellbeing , built on personal enjoyment and new experiences , that engages mind , body and soul . Her most recent accomplishment is completing the certification course as a wellness advisor , and using these skills to encourage SpringRidge residents in all areas of living a balanced life .
She says while residents may only focus on the physical aspects of a class , the benefits of socializing and being with friends and neighbors are immeasurable .
“ Isolation is a major threat to our health ,” said Leslie . “ By attending a class , you ’ re strengthening relationships with others . It ’ s not unusual for residents to stop in to visit a neighbor who may have missed a class or call to check on them . Knowing how much you ’ re cared for , not just by staff , but by your peers , does wonders for your overall health .”
It is this sense of connection that SpringRidge calls “ The Power of We .” Zest Director Cindy Foster compares it to being part of a supportive family of waiters , chefs , housekeepers , care

and wellness teams , and friends and neighbors who come together to help you thrive .
For residents who are hesitant to try one of the many opportunities for health and wellness offered at Spring- Ridge , Leslie encourages them to find an activity they like and give it a try . Or , find something they think they may like and try it . And , with classes ranging from water fitness to strength training , there is sure to be a fitness program to pique every interest .
“ Being able to witness the smile on a resident ’ s face who may have been unsure or seeing the positive physical changes in a resident who has been consistent in their workouts are the things that mean the most to me . It ’ s a feeling like no other ,” she said . “ God has given me this gift , and to be able to share it with the residents has been one of the most fulfilling things I ’ ve ever done .”
Leslie ’ s overall goal is assisting residents find small things to incorporate daily — micro habits — that make long-term differences , not just for this 2022 but beyond .
