Charbonneau Tennis Club

Julie Clark was an Oregon State Open Champion at 17
Charbonneau Tennis Club has champions that have lived here in Charbonneau for many years .
I interviewed one of our champs , Julie Clark — a longtime resident and former Oregon State Champion . With so many new faces and changes in our community , I thought this would be a good way to introduce club members to the Charbonneau community .
Julie is a University of Oregon alumni , former teacher and school principal . She was more or less , discovered in grade school by a physical education teacher , who then drove Julie to David Douglas High School to practice with the team . This was in the seventh and eighth grade , Julie had the coordination and strength of her dad — a seasoned athlete . She was encouraged to go on the pro circuit at 16 and won the Oregon State Open at 17 ! Onward to college , which is where this story is leading .
In remembering her favorite moments , she recalled an opportunity she had through her room mate at Oregon . Her roommate ’ s dad was president of Canada Dry Beverages and was in need of some local outreach advertising . He hired Julie for a few TV spots and then had her embark on a community outreach program . Kathi : How did that work ? Julie : I was hired for a few TV spots and then they had me embark on a community outreach program . I was named “ The Bubble Up Girl ” ( rival to 7-Up ). Kathi : What did that entail ? Julie : I was to go into a disadvantaged neighborhood , knock on doors and when someone came to the door , ask if they had ever heard of Bubble Up ? If they had not , I was to give them a certificate for a six pack of Bubble
Up . If they had a bottle of the soda , I was to give them a $ 25 grocery certificate , which in the 1960s was valuable .
Kathi : How did that go ? Were you successful ?
Julie : Well , I gave away a lot of grocery certificates ! One of the boys , around 7 or 8 years old , figured out that if he took the certificate to the store , picked up the six pack , then ran back to the neighborhood ahead of Julie so he could give six neighbors each one bottle . Kathi : Did he get in trouble ? Julie : No , I knew what he was doing , it was to help his neighbors get the $ 25 in groceries ! So , I would go up to the door and when they answered , I would ask , Have you ever heard of Bubble Up soda ? They would reply “ Why , yes , and I have a bottle right here .”
“ Wonderful ,” I said , “ here is a certificate for $ 25 in groceries .”
I was a little afraid to tell how many certificates for groceries she had given out . But , they seemed quite pleased with her outreach program ! I thought the boy was really smart and caring about his neighbors to figure out how he could help the Champions come in
