CDU Newsletter Local High Schools Travel to CDU

April 2023
CDU welcomed students from two different high-schools on back-to-back days as part of the University ’ s effort to encourage future health professionals to enroll in our programs .
On the first day , 9th and 11th grade students from Long Beach Polytechnic High School came to the campus for a visit . More than 40 students from the high school ’ s MEDS pathway who are interested in careers in health care spent four hours on campus participating in a range of activities . These included medical technique demonstrations , workshops , a campus tour , and presentations from CDU representatives about the University and its programs .
The day ended with a photo opp where the future medical professionals were presented with goodie bags that included CDU branded items .
“ This was a great opportunity for our students to start thinking about health careers more seriously , and experience such a wonderful university so close to home in real time , with real people who are there to support them every step of the way ,” said Danielle Sawyer , MEDS Lead Teacher and Health Educator at Long Beach Polytechnic High School , who led the field trip to the CDU campus .
The following day saw nearly a dozen students from Augustus Hawkins High School in South Los Angeles trek to campus for similar presentations . The visit included an opportunity to meet CDU President Dr . David M . Carlisle , who joined the students during their meal break on campus . The visitors were also treated to a panel of current CDU students who answered the high-schoolers ’ questions and provided a picture of what campus life is like at the University .
“ It was incredibly inspirational to meet these students , many of whom have already decided that they want to dedicate their careers to improving health outcomes in underserved communities ,” shared Dr . Carlisle . “ I look forward to welcoming them someday as future CDU students .”
