Main Sewer Early Works Project
An aging and deteriorated Merri Creek Sewer
was experiencing surcharging beyond its
design capacity. The Early Works Project was
undertaken to alleviate pressure on the sewer by
diverting flows from the main sewer into a reliever
sewer. The project team suggested a scope
modification which involved hand tunnelling
techniques instead of open cut trenching.
This drastically reduced the construction and
environmental footprint; minimised the quantity
of earthworks and subsequent truck movements
through the suburban area; and reduced costs
for the client by 40%.
