The Mona reservoir has the capacity to hold 800 million gallons of water. Kingston's water demand is approximately 44 million gallons of water per day. Additional water to supply the city is supported by the Rio Cobre, Wag Water and local wells.
Environmental challenges do impact the water coming from the mountains. "The aqueduct was designed to carry in rainy seasons 60 million gallons per day. Over the years we have seen a reduction in yield. It now becomes as low as 6 million gallons per day. This is no doubt due to the deforestation, forest fires and poor land practices upstream”.
