From Mountain to Tap:
Following the Yallahs-Hope Water Channels
Jason Oliphant Watershed Supervisor for Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine at the National Water Commission (NWC).
“It’s quite an exciting job, I ensure that the available water coming from our watersheds is directed into our intakes and distributed to the different treatment plants across the eastern section of the island”.
Fun Fact: The pipelines which feed water to the Kingston Metropolitan Area were constructed between 1983-1986. Water traveled along 19 mile gravity- powered pipes from its two intakes – the Yallahs River and Negro River in St. Thomas and the Hope River in St. Andrew to enter Kingston for the first time on December 31, 1985. The Mona treatment plant treats 15 million gallons of water per day.
