THE CHANGES award “The Hockey Song” Inducted into Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame The Prairie States Win Top Prize at Project WILD Finale Stompin’ Tom Connors’ iconic anthem “The Hockey Song” was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (CSHF) in a special ceremony on Saturday, October 27, in partnership with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Released in 1973, the beloved song celebrated its 45 th anniversary in 2018 as a staple tune played throughout Canadian and American NHL arenas, and at every Maple Leafs home game. Following a week-long boot camp, a series of showcase performances, charity chal- lenges, and public voting, the top three award recipients for Alberta Music and Wild 953’s 2018 Project WILD are: 1) Edmonton’s The Prairie States; 2) Red Deer’s Ryan Lan- glois; and 3) Calgary’s Leaving Thomas. For winning, they receive $100,953, $75,000, and $50,000 in prize money, respectively. Created in hopes of fostering the Al- berta music industry and creating a sense of community among artists and industry professionals, Project WILD has played a role in launching the careers of many local artists including previous top-three finalists The Dungarees, Brad Saunders, Sykamore, Nice Horse, Ken Stead, and Tanya Ryan. THE LYNNES AT THE CFMAS The LYNNeS & Pharis Romero Lead the Way at Canadian Folk Music Awards On Nov. 22, 2018, the Cashbox Canada Legacy Awards in Toronto, which are presented by Cashbox Magazine Canada, honoured Canadian music industry builder and educator John Harris. The presentation ceremony took place at Harris Institute in Toronto, a music industry school Harris founded in 1989. Cashbox CEO and Editor-in-Chief Sandy Graham presented the award to Harris, who gave an emotional and heartfelt speech thanking those who helped him in his personal and professional life along the way. Lisa Hartt, whom Harris used to manage, gave a live solo performance of her hit “Old Time Movie” and Leonard Cohen’s “Tower of Song.” The evening kicked off with a video highlight- ing Harris’s early years as a band manager, cel- JOHN HARRIS & LISA HARTT ebrating his work with The Creeps, Tranquillity Base with Ian Thomas, Ocean, The Lisa Hartt Band, and Ishan People. The video also included the story of how Harris and Bob Hahn formed Rising Records and created the musical Rockabye Hamlet. For more information, go to www.cashboxcanada.ca. 16 • C A N A D I A N M U S I C I A N John Harris Honoured at Cashbox Canada Legacy Awards The 2018 Canadian Folk Music Awards were presented during a gala weekend that included two awards shows on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, 2018 in Calgary. Both eve- nings saw 10 awards presented, plus the Slaight Music Unsung Hero Award on the Friday evening, which was given to Terry Wickham, the long-time artistic director of the Edmonton Folk Music Festival. Picking up two awards over the week- end was multi-instrumentalist duo The LYNNeS (Lynn Miles and Lynne Hanson) for Ensemble of the Year and English Songwriters of the Year for their album Heartbreak Song for the Radio. The other two-award winner was Pharis Romero of Pharis & Jason Romero, who received the honours for Traditional Singer of the Year and Vocal Group of the Year. The CFMA for Young Performer(s) of the Year went to Joseph Coffin and Nick Earle of Earle and Coffin for their album A Day in July. Steve Dawson was the recip- ient of Producer of the Year, and Instru- mental Group of the Year was awarded to The Fretless for their album Live from the Art Farm.
