Duff Roman to Receive 2019 Walt Grealis
Special Achievement Award
The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has announced
that broadcast luminary Duff Roman will be awarded the 2019 Walt Grealis Special
Achievement Award for his ongoing contributions and dedication to the Canadian
music industry. The award recognizes individuals whose work has significantly impacted the growth and
development of the Canadian music industry. Roman will be honoured at the 48th Annual JUNO Gala Dinner
and Awards on March 16 th in London, ON.
Roman’s contributions to Canadian music span over 60 years. From his early days as a radio announcer, time
with Roman Records, and long-standing career with CHUM-FM to his executive industry roles and co-founding
of FACTOR, Roman has been a key figure in the development of countless Canadian artists. After co-founding
Roman Records in the early 1960s, Roman paved the way as a pioneer record label owner and artist manager.
He notably produced Little Caesar and The Consuls, as well as the first recordings of Levon and the Hawks, who went on to become The Band
backing Bob Dylan. Roman also helped launch the careers of The Paupers and Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee David Clayton-Thomas,
among many others.

Nominated for 2019 Grammys

In early December, the Recording Acade-
my announced the 2019 Grammy Award
nominations across 84 categories. On the
list are a number of Canadians, includ-
ing Drake, who led the way with seven
nominations, along with Shawn Mendes,
Daniel Caesar, Chromeo, Diana Krall, pro-
ducer Boi-1da, Yiddish Glory, Young Spirit,
engineer Philip
Shaw Bova,
and author Rob
Bowman.
Among
Drake’s seven
nominations are
nods for Album
of the Year for
Scorpion, two
ALESSIA CARA WITH HER nominations in
2018 GRAMMY FOR BEST
NEW ARTIST the category
of Best Rap
Performance for “Nice for What” and “Sicko
Mode,” as well as Song and Record of the
Year for “God’s Plan.”
Drake’s production partner Boi-1da
was nominated for Producer of the Year,
Non Classical, and Daniel Caesar was
nominated for Best R&B Performance
alongside H.E.R. for the song “Best Part.”
Diana Krall was nominated twice for her
work with Tony Bennett in the catego-
ries of Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album
and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
For Best Pop Vocal Album, Krall will be
competing against fellow Canadian Shawn
Mendes.
