When I was asked by a long time friend’s family
to update their heritage home the goal was to
preserve its historical integrity while infusing a
fresh traditional palette into the space. The home
had seen over two decades of family coming
and going and an entire revamp was needed. All
existing finishes and furnishings were replaced and
millwork was installed to enhance the historical
architecture of the home.
my challenge
The kitchen had not seen an update since the early
eighties and two decades of raising their three
daughters. It had a peninsula that cut the flow
to the adjacent rooms and the traditional closed
rooms for the era of the house allowed little
natural light. The actual layout and function of the
kitchen was a traditional “U shape” which worked
well, however the counter top space was limited
and the standard eighties’ peninsula feature became
a catch all. The kitchen opened onto a small family
room and lacked the required seating to allow
for the large family to comfortably enjoy a meal
together.
my solution
“The end result was a light infused,
historical inspired, eat-in kitchen.”

The first dramatic change was done by opening
the wall between the front entry and family room.
The front door side lights were replaced with clear
glass panels which brought in natural light in the
front of the house. The peninsula was removed
which resulted in better traffic flow between the
two spaces. New hardwood parquet floors were
installed in the kitchen to match the existing
hardwood throughout the house making the entire
space feel larger and more cohesive. The end result
was a beautiful eat-in kitchen.
