ONE YEAR ON:
THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF #LINEDEFINERS A dim light lingers over the SkyCity theatre. Despite its 700 person capacity the venue is almost empty, with the few people present staring blankly at the screens of their phones and laptops. We’re not here for the show though. Instead, our attention is directed at the two handsome young men flanking us. Besides one’s ponytail and the other’s golden beard little has changed with the duo since they made their big screen debut almost a year ago at this very same theatre. Yes, it’s hard to believe that it’s been so long since Sam Brothers and Scott Williams first blew away audiences worldwide with their feminist anthem ‘Defined Lines’. But have the year been kind? We decided to catch up with the two to find out more:" " B&M: So how was it just after the video went viral? How did you cope with the fame?" " Scott: I think we coped pretty well. We got to skip a few stein lines, but besides that we kept it on the down low." Sam: I had increased success on Facebook and Tinder mostly. Plus I managed to pick a girl up in the Youtube comments for it. Also, Calvin Klein wanted a shoot, but in between the bitches and money " I couldn’t make time." " B&M: Have you adopted any of the feminist attitudes championed by the video?" " Scott: Well I’ve grown a ponytail if that counts?" Sam: I no longer have sex. I make love." " B&M: And hopefully it helped you with the ladies too…" " Scott: I try not to use the video as a romantic tool. It has attracted a lot of attention in the gay community though." Sam: I’ve developed an affection for being led around on a lead." " B&M: Do you think the video’s message holds true?" " Scott: Absolutely. Frankly, I think 2014 has been more relevant than ever when it comes to, y’know, what it’s about. What with Tumblr blogs, rape culture, Disney’s Frozen, the Ukraine situation, third wave feminism, third world feminism, Nairobi, Orange is the New Black, and all the other associated content and issues. Women’s studies." Sam: I totally agree." " B&M: So what’s been going on since then?" " Scott: I’ve been milking the video for all it’s worth. It’s on my CV. I took everything else off to make sure it didn’t distract. That being said, I don’t want to be defined by it." Sam: I’m on the hunt for a new exchange student." " B&M: Thanks for your time.
