Advice from the

How to Prepare

Main Duties

The job of the JCL Historian is to record the events of the JCL . There are 3 main things that the historian needs to do ( for the most part ): run the Photo of the Month competition , create a convention history , and create the digital scrapbook .
The Photo of the Month is a monthly contest where people across the JCL submit photos to be judged .
The convention history is a detailed account of the JCL convention that you are elected in . This is something that is done pretty soon after convention ends . Because of this , make sure you pay attention to who wins certain awards such as a silver bowl . Additionally , pay close attention to specific events that you can use as extra notes to put in the history ( for example , I put Alaska joining the JCL as an extra note !).
Finally , the best part : the digital scrapbook . This is a great way to end your term as a reflection for not only yourself but the board and the entire JCL !
Additionally , it is important that the Historian promotes the JCL and reaches out to local and state historians . For example , monthly meetings on Zoom with any historian that will show up is a great way to learn more about different chapters and provide a way for historians to meet each other
The main thing in my eyes that people need to know in order to become the Historian is to be present in the moment . A lot of the time , especially at busy events , it can be hard to focus and do your job of recording events . For many Historians ( including myself ), I use a camera as a way to document events . Additionally , learn how to use different programs . For me , I use Canva and the Adobe products the most , however you don ’ t have to . Even if you know how to use a program , it still helps to keep on learning new tools .
