(Word & Worship) 4-03 Parent Involvement in Faith Formation – John Collins In our programs we continue to nurture growth in faith in our students, but we can also consider opportunities to support parents and families…nurturing their growth along with their children as the primary educators of the faith in the home. It all depends on “how” we do “what” we do. In this session, John will share some ideas and suggestions for re-thinking what we do to involve and engage parents in their child’s faith formation. We live in a pagan, secular world, surrounded everywhere by those who claim to be Catholic and Christian. What does it mean to live out your faith and be unafraid of the consequences? (Word) 4-05 Compassionate Christ, Compassionate People: Exploring the Spirituality of the Liturgy – Bob Hurd At every celebration of the Eucharist, the compassionate Christ gathers us to himself through the bread of the Word and the bread of the Eucharist. Bob’s presentation shows how this spirituality shapes the liturgy and explores how our various ministries—music-making, presiding, proclamation of the scriptures—can better serve it. (Worship) 4-06 Neuroscience and Spirituality: Tech, Our Brains, and Spiritual Practices – Anne Kernion How tech use is affecting our brains and our functioning. Then we explore spiritual practices which thwart these negative effects. (Witness) 4-07 Adults at the Center: Nurturing Adults to Grow in Faith – Douglas Leal What do we need to do–and who do we need to be–as pastoral leaders, ministers, and catechists to nurture adults into an ever-deepening relationship with Jesus Christ? Do we challenge and support adults to become disciples, or do we accept a stagnant faith? And how do we move this work to the center of parish life? Not so fast – many of our students and parishioners THINK they know the answers to these questions, but over time misconceptions have clouded their knowledge. This workshop will unravel some of these errors and offer ways to teach the concepts to our audiences. Through anecdotes and catechesis, this session will not only right the wrongs, but offer clever ways to teach these inaccuracies. (Word) 4-10 Preaching in the Age of Social-Media – Father Mike Russo Social media has become a prime tool of persuasion and influence. How does a parish community employ these new communication tools along with traditional media as methods to advance preaching, build parish community and influence evangelization. Father Mike Russo will draw on his experience in developing “Sunday to Sunday,” a preaching project for America|Media, seminary and adult education. (Word & Witness) 4-11 Responding to and Preventing Partner Violence in the Families we Serve – Dr. Christauria Welland Are we prepared to respond to victims of domestic violence and their children who come to us for help at our parishes and Catholic schools? Dr. Welland will also provide a brief summary of the basic skills necessary for violence prevention that we can teach our parishioners and students, and material will be available for further information. (Word & Witness) 4-12 Teaching RCIA/RICA to Create Vibrant Witnesses and a Vibrant Parish – Mary Wuertz von Holt While teaching RCIA/RICA is a lot of work, team members know they get more benefits out of the class than the work they put in. How can we structure RCIA so that the entire parish is involved and they grow in their faith? Attend this session and learn tips for catechizing not only your catechumens and candidates but also their sponsors, team volunteers, and long-time parishioners. (Worship) 4-15 Creating liturgical environment in a non church space, such as a classroom; creating sacred space – Katie Wolf Teachers, catechists, and other church leaders often lead prayer in classrooms, meeting rooms, and other spaces outside of the church building. In this workshop, you will learn practical strategies for transforming these spaces into environments rich with symbols that engage the senses, speak to the heart, and help lead your groups into deeper prayer. (Word & Worship) 4-16 Holy Play, Act 2 (Part 1 of a 2 hour session) – Nancy Chinn If you can print your name, you can do this. Participants will produce their own banner by learning to use a knife to cut patterns in paper that create a light filled image. Material cost of $xx includes paper, (2 1/2′ x 4′) pattern, dowel and knife. This project can be shared by up to three people per banner.
