was met, we thought about good dresses. Initially, we
stayed in a rented house. But gradually we felt that we
needed our own house. We thought that a 2-wheeler
would be good and slowly we switched to a 4-
wheeler. But after sometime, we tend to become
increasingly discontented about everything. We start
complaining about the God-given house, 4-wheeler,
job and even our spouse and children.
This discontentment crops up when we crave
for more. When our heart refuses to be satisfied with
the God-given blessings, it becomes discontented.
This makes us lead an unethical lifestyle. We try and
start earning money in various questionable ways
displeasing the Lord.
Note what the Word says:
1 Tim 6:6 “But godliness with contentment is great
gain for we brought nothing into the world, and we
cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have
food and clothing, with these we will be content.”
We should always be thankful for all the
blessings that God has showered upon us. Note the
following verses:
possessions. But he was not satisfied. He wanted the
vineyard nearby to be converted to a vegetable
garden. When he made his request known to Naboth,
he bluntly refused.
Note how Ahab reacts:
1Ki 21:4 - “And Ahab went into his house vexed and
sullen because of what Naboth the Jezreelite had said
to him, for he had said, “I will not give you the
inheritance of my fathers.” And he lay down on his
bed and turned away his face and would eat no food.”
On seeing this, the cunning queen Jezebel
hatches a conspiracy. Jezebel asks the leading men of
the city to call for a fast. She also commands them to
appoint two worthless men to bring charges against
Naboth and consequently gets him stoned to death.
The plan works perfectly and Ahab took the vineyard
for himself. But we must remember that the whole
conspiracy had a 'Religious Colour' to it. Even today
we find several financial frauds taking place under
the guise of religion.
Psa 37:16 “Better is the little that the righteous has
than the abundance of many wicked.”
Pro 15:16 - “Better is a little with the fear of the Lord
than great treasure and trouble with it.”
From the above verses, it is crystal clear that
there is a great advantage in having less possessions.
Many a time, when wealth is accumulated through
wicked means trouble increases as well.
See how the story unfolds:
1Ki 21:2 - “And after this Ahab said to Naboth,
“Give me your vineyard, that I may h ave it for a
vegetable garden, because it is near my house, and I
will give you a better vineyard for it; or, if it seems
good to you, I will give you its value in money.”
The king must have had a lot of properties and
We find a similar incident happening in the life
of David. After he sinned with Bathsheba, God sent
prophet Nathan who spoke in a beautiful parable: A
rich man had numerous flocks and herds but the poor
man had only one ewe-lamb. It was like a daughter to
him. But the rich man plucked the ewe-lamb from the
poor man and slaughtered it for a traveler who had
come to his house (2 Sam 12:1-4).
The rich man was not satisfied with his
