In this article I want to give some practical
suggestions on how we can lead a life of integrity in our
professional and business life.
administration, we need to follow three important
principles firm, friendly and faultless.
We also need to do our work with all our heart. We
need to do it, taking a personal interest in it. We find a good
example in the life of Joseph. His father asked him to find
his brothers at Shechem (Gen 37:12). But he went as far as
Dothan even though it was far away (Gen 37:17). Though
his sincerity caused severe sufferings in his life, he became
the ruler of Egypt (Gen 41:42). This was what Solomon
says, in Ecclesiastes 9:10 “Whatever your hand finds to do,
do it with your might.”
2. Being Diligent In Our Work
Prov 12:24 “The hand of the diligent will rule, while
the slothful will be put to forced labor.”
1. Being Skillful in Our Work
Pro 22:29 “Do you see a man skillful in his work? He
will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure
men.”
In all the works we do, we need to be skillful and
careful. Supposing I drive a car, I need to drive it carefully.
Today, we find many people driving along with mobile
phone in their hands. If we are careless, there might be
considerable loss or an accident. The above verse applies to
students as well. If you prepare your subjects carelessly,
you may not succeed in life and you will not stand before
kings. I have seen many students who are not careful
enough to read the questions. They write a wrong answer
even though they know the right answer. They do not read
the question carefully. Because of such carelessness, we
might end up in more miserable positions. Suppose, if a
doctor gives an injection to a person, without determining
whether he is allergic to it or not, puts the life of that patient
in danger.
In order that we do a job skillfully, it has to be done
meticulously. It is not the macro-level thinking that is
needed but a micro-level thinking. It is about giving
importance to the details. It is being sincere in small things.
We should never do any job in a superfluous manner. Once I
was posted in Chengalpattu where I was in charge of the
administration. My table would be flooded with lots of files.
Many officers would submit various applications and
would explain things to me. But I never signed any
documents without carefully reading it. When it comes to
Prov 24:30-34 “I passed by the field of a sluggard,
by the vineyard of a man lacking sense, and behold, it was
all overgrown with thorns; the ground was covered with
nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. Then I saw and
considered it; I looked and received instruction. A little
sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest,
and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like
an armed man.”
We need to be diligent in our work. We read about a
lazy man in the book of Proverbs. As Solomon gazed upon
the field, he saw that it was all overgrown and was full of
thorns. The boundary wall had been broken down and was
not properly maintained. This was because the lazy man did
not work in his field. The land was good and the plants
thrived, but the man was lazy. What is meant by being lazy?
When we do nothing, we are lazy. When we refuse to get up
from the bed, we become lazy people. Procrastination is
another characteris tic of laziness. A lazy teacher does not
cover the lessons beforehand. We think that we have time
tomorrow and can finish the pending job(s). But we should
not forget that tomorrow does not belong to us. Anything
might happen tomorrow and undone works may remain
undone. The Bible says that a lazy person is a friend of a
man who destroys.
It is said that in order to gather one drop of honey, the
bees search several hundreds of flowers and travel several
thousands of miles. The bees are never lazy.
Apostle Paul warns against lazy people in his second
letter to Thessalonians:
