AUGUST 2018
In Professional & Business Life
A. Lionel, General Overseer, Blessing Youth Mission
(Sermon delivered during Blesso' 2018 held in Trichy, Tamil Nadu)
God delights in integrity. He compares the Church to
a bride, who is to be blameless and faultless. As we are
living in the last days, the love of many has grown cold and
wickedness has increased. Integrity has become a lost
virtue.
During the dawn of the New Testament period,
Zechariah and Elizabeth were serving the Lord with
integrity, though they had no children. They were advanced
in years. An angel of the Lord told Zechariah that a child
will be born to him and he will turn the hearts of the people
to the Lord. This is what the Lord wants to do today. He
wants to turn His people toward Him.
Our spiritual life cannot be separated from our social
life. The beliefs that we have will definitely affect the
atmosphere that we live in and this includes our
professional and business life. Though at times we struggle
to maintain integrity in our professional lives, God expects
that our spirituality extend to the secular life as well.
Work A Gift From God
God has given to human beings. When God created Adam,
He also gave him work to do (Gen 2:15 ). It was more than
mere gardening. God wanted Adam to name all the animals
and birds that He had created. Adam's job was to take care of
the animals that God created. God never wanted Adam to be
idle. Even after the fall, God commanded Adam to work the
ground (Gen 3:23).
Not only Adam was a worker, but his children Cain
and Abel were workers too. Cain was a farmer and Abel, a
shepherd. In Exodus, we read that the Israelites were subject
to bonded labour (Ex 1:11). We also read about the job of
midwifery in Exodus 1:17. Moses was an educated man.
This means that there must have been teaching profession
during Moses' times (Acts 7:22). In fact, Moses was a
student in Egypt. Similarly we read about people with
diverse professions like goldsmiths, priests, Levites etc.,
who were involved in the rebuilding of the wall in the book
of Nehemiah. We even find Elisha plowing in the fields (1
Kin 19:19). Prophet Amos was a herdsman and dresser of
sycamore figs (Amos 7:14). In the New Testament we find
jobs like fishing, tax-collecting, medical work etc.,
First of all, we need to understand that work is a gift
