BURDEKIN REGION WATER QUALITY RESULTS
DISSOLVED INORGANIC NITROGEN ( DIN )
2025 Reef-wide Target :
60 per cent reduction in anthropogenic end-of-catchment DIN ( 3,620 tonnes ).
The dissolved inorganic nitrogen ( DIN ) load leaving Great Barrier Reef catchments showed a cumulative reduction of 28.4 per cent to June 2022 and a modelled reduction of 0.7 per cent , about 35 tonnes , from July 2020 to June 2022 .
The reduction in the Burdekin region was 2 per cent or about 15 tonnes from July 2020 to June 2022 . This was achieved through adopting improved practices in sugarcane including improved mill mud and irrigation management in the Burdekin Irrigation area .
