WHAT IS
THE REEF WATER QUALITY REPORT CARD ?
The Reef Water Quality Report Card assesses the combined results of all Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan activities .
It shows progress towards the 2025 water quality targets for each of the six regions , as well as wetland and inshore marine condition . The Reef regions are Cape York , Wet Tropics , Burdekin , Mackay Whitsunday , Fitzroy and Burnett Mary .
The Reef Water Quality Report Card reports on the success of actions and identifies whether further measures need to be taken to address water quality on the Great Barrier Reef .
It draws on multiple lines of evidence including industry and extension programs . The primary source of agricultural data for the report card is the Paddock to Reef Integrated Monitoring , Modelling and Reporting Program ( Paddock to Reef program ).
Land management practice adoption results are not included in this report card because an independent review of those targets is underway . Progress across all Reef regions is almost halfway towards the target to reduce dissolved inorganic nitrogen loads by 2025 and more than halfway to the target to reduce fine sediment by 2025 .

BURDEKIN REGION
SNAPSHOT
The Burdekin region is about 34 per cent of the total Great Barrier Reef ( GBR ) catchment area . The region consists of five major catchments : Black , Ross , Haughton , Burdekin and Don .
Approximately 90 per cent of the region is used for grazing , 1 per cent is irrigated agriculture primarily associated with sugarcane farming and horticulture and the balance contains conservation areas and urban centres .
Improving the quality of water flowing from the land to the sea is critical to supporting the GBR ’ s health and resilience . That is why NQ Dry Tropics works with landholders and land managers on projects to improve water quality in local waterways .
Our approach focuses on practical solutions developed and delivered in partnership with land managers , industry and community groups , researchers , governments , and Traditional Owners . We bring together the best science and local knowledge , in a framework of adaptive management and continuous improvement .
