Observing our sciences
In this section of BAMOS , we welcome photographs related to the AMOS sciences with a short description of the phenomena or drivers contributing to the conditions photographed . The intention is to use this section to reflect on the past season around the country and share knowledge and observations of our sciences in action .
This issue , we are lucky to receive these stunning submissions from AMOS Fellow Dr Greg Holland , taken on his recent trip to Italy .
Top : A solitary , high-based ( 2,000-2,500 m ) cumulonimbus take at sunset from Petralia Soprano , Sicily ( elevation 1,147 m ). Bottom : Lenticular and lee wave clouds near sunset over Mt Etna , Sicily . Over a period of 90-odd minutes , a series of cloud bubbles had formed over the Etna slopes , then punched upwards through the lee clouds , before becoming trapped and rapidly dissipating at the inversion . In the image , one such bubble has just reached the inversion and the remains of the previous bubble are to its right .
