DAUGHTER
OF
EVE
Jeong Wu Kim | Poetry
Oh, my dear, dear girl,
come o'er here and seat by me
I'll tell thee something
that freedom 'twill bring.
You were born as a princess
grown as a girl
and dreamt to be a great man.
Yet thou canst not, thou art a
woman.
So when the time comes,
Thou shouldst take off thy crown,
say good-bye to all thy friends,
and leave to the strange shore,
As thy mother did.
Thou will cross the bridge to
adulthood,
And set thyself on the shore,
A son of Adam will pick thee up.
If thou can’t refuse,
Then go with him.
For he was a prince and will be a
king,
Thou canst be a queen of him.
‘tis not bad, either.

But as thou leavest, forget it not;
The fact that never should be forgotten:
Thy first name begins with a capital
letter,
And thy last name belongs to only thee.
So, Little girl, little girl,
Forget it not.
When thou rememberest it,
Freedom is thine.
When thou lose it,
Thou lose all thyself.
