FIRST TIMER FAQ ’ S
What should I expect ?
It ’ s simple : Expect to enjoy yourself . Let go of any preconceptions you may have . Open yourself up to the music ; notice how it ebbs and flows — quite robust at times , delicate at others , but always powerful .
Can I clap ?
Yes ! Clapping is actually encouraged , but at specific moments in the performance . At the beginning of the performance , the concertmaster will come onstage . The audience will applaud as a sign of appreciation for the musicians . After the orchestra tunes , the conductor and possibly soloists will come onstage . Clapping is also encouraged here , as well !
In most classical concerts , applauds will not happen again until the end of a piece . This can be a little tricky because many pieces seem to end many times — in other words , they have several parts called movements . When in doubt , it ’ s safe to wait and follow the rest of the crowd .
What do I do during intermission ?
Intermission is a short rest period for musicians , the conductor , and audience . Most intermission will last 20 minutes , during this time feel free to use the restrooms , visit concessions , or just have a stretch .
What should I do before the next concert ?
Over time , many concert goers find more enjoyment when they prepare for a concert . Take home this magazine and read the program notes , which can also be found online , before your next visit to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra .
