Boston Harbor Islands Pavillion
Boston, Massachusetts
In 2008 the National Park Service and the Boston
Harbor Islands Alliance engaged the design team
to realize their vision for an Information and visitor’s
center at the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway.
The project is most visibly identified with twin ultrathin cast-concrete shell structures, which provide an
iconic. Below, two kiosks host an interpretive program
and accommodate rangers, ticketing, and concessions
and a unified but varied ground plane links these
architectural elements to larger urban circulation
patterns and forges connections to the distinct
geometries of the adjacent lawn, promenade, and
mothers’ walk.
Bridging the plaza and the lawn, a granite map
illustrates the islands and the city’s coastal edge and
provides a space for interpretive signage. During
rain events, distortions in the roof direct a cascade of
stormwater onto the carved granite splash block below. There, rainfall passes over a field of tiny surface
excavations, which reference coastal tidal pools.
This modest project activates the Rose Fitzgerald
Kennedy Greenway, directly connects this linear park
to the neighboring districts, and makes a place in
the city to recognize the unique ecological and
cultural resource of the Harbor Islands National
Recreation Area.
