Lori-Jane Garrett – Horserace Betting Levy Board
Hi my name is Lori-Jane Garrett. I have recently completed an undergraduate degree in Racehorse Performance and Rehabilitation at Hartpury University. Throughout my studies, I have developed a strong understanding of equine performance, welfare, rehabilitation and the wider structure of the racing industry. Alongside university, I gained practical experience through roles and placement within racing, giving me valuable insight into the sport and the importance of teamwork, communication and horse welfare.
What excites me most about horseracing is the balance between tradition, performance and the responsibility to continuously improve welfare standards and public trust within the sport. I am particularly interested in the future of equine welfare and how scientific research can support trainers, staff and decision-making within racing. Through the Development Programme, I hope to broaden my industry knowledge and build a future career supporting British racing in a regulatory or research-focused role, while continuing to learn from experienced industry professionals.
Lucas Hesse – Great British Racing
Hi, my name is Lucas Hesse. I recently completed a Bachelor’ s degree in Sport Marketing at Leeds Beckett University, where I developed knowledge across everything from branding and sponsorship to governance and campaign strategy. During my studies, I discovered a passion for the creative side of marketing, particularly storytelling and bringing campaigns to life.
Alongside my degree, I completed a PR placement at Hatch in Leeds, working with a range of brands across different sectors. Sport has always been a major part of my life, especially football, tennis, and golf, but through family connections I developed a strong interest in horse racing in my late teen years.
That passion led me into racehorse ownership through a syndicate with family and friends, Quest Thoroughbreds, where we celebrated seven wins and attended Epsom as owners with our horse- Mart.
My dissertation explored the current state of British horse racing, focusing on post-COVID attendance and fan engagement. I’ m excited to combine my passion for racing with my marketing skills to help grow and enhance the sport’ s consumer experience and Britain’ s best race-days.
