Michael Walton – Racecourse Association
I ’ m a 22-year-old from Shropshire and I have just finished my degree at Harper Adams University having studied Rural Enterprise and Land Management . Horse racing has been a passion of mine since I attended my first race day , a point to point at a local racecourse . My passion has grown , to a stage now where I own my own racehorse and have developed a great passion for bloodstock . After doing some research looking for a route into the industry for someone who doesn ’ t ride , I stumbled upon the Development Programme , and it provided a direct pathway for what I want to achieve . I am most excited to join the programme and can ’ t wait to build on my current knowledge of the sport along with developing myself as an individual . My long-term aim is to develop an exciting career in horse racing , giving back to the sport I love and making the sport as inclusive as possible , catering for all its stakeholders and helping to alter its position in public perception .

Last year , I graduated from Hartpury University with a degree in International Horseracing Business . I have always been keen to pursue a career in racing - I am fortunate to have been surrounded by the industry growing up , initiating a lifelong obsession for the sport . The Development Programme is such a highly regarded initiative , for which I am delighted to have been accepted onto . I look forward to learning more about the strategic development within racing .
I am excited to start my placement within the Safeguarding and Integrity team at the BHA . Having worked in racing , I am very passionate about the welfare of the people . I am keen to support the efforts to improve working conditions and retention within yards , ensuring that stable staff in particular have a positive working experience . Additionally , I am eager to promote the Respect In Racing campaign and strive to make racing a more desirable and sustainable career choice , for the longevity of our sport . careersinracing . com
