Tony Hopkinson Dumisane Mdaka Refurbishment of power line The Summerstrand-Chatty power line in Port Elizabeth supplies power to a large portion of the city and to many tourism facilities, including the Boardwalk Casino Complex. Recent assessment of the 132 kV powerline, shows that the 35 km line is severely corroded and needs urgent attention to avert power failures and prevent unnecessary accidents. SBA has been appointed by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality to oversee the refurbishment of this important power line. For optimum safety to municipal workers and to prevent electricity disruptions to downstream consumers, a new line will be built adjacent to the existing line. The new line will deviate from the existing route at the proposed Madiba Bay Leisure Park, to ensure easy access for routine and corrective maintenance. Once the new line has been built, the old lattice towers of the existing power line will be removed. Contact Carsten Klotz – [email protected] 9
