Kick your bad habit
with a good exercise
Exercise is a fantastic way to tackle
bad habits. Whatever your vice;
exercise can help you control it.
Smoking may give you a perceived
sense of stress relief. In this same
way, exercise in place of smoking can
also give you a reward.
START SMALL
Work on replacing one habit at a
time.
HOW HABITS FORM
Every habit, good and bad, starts with a “habit loop”.
1. Trigger
A cue tells
your brain
to go into
automatic
mode and
lets a type
of behaviour
unfold.
Make a plan. If it’s smoking you want
to quit, come up with three exercise
options to replace the habit.
Eliminate triggers. If you smoke
more when you have a drink, cut out
alcohol for a while.

2. Routine
This is the
behaviour itself.
3. Reward
Find an exercise or activity you
think you’d enjoy, and stick to it.
Whatever exercise you choose,
love it as much as you loved your
previous bad habit.
Something that your brain likes
that helps it remember the
“habit loop” in the future.
