The importance of differentiation in education.

Students have different levels when it comes to learning, some students might be brilliant in math, other students are better in linguistics. Besides the fact that students differ in talents, they also have different educational needs. Differentiation is a tool the teacher can use to offer students a way of education that ‏-‏matces their way of learning.

In the early ‎1970‎’ s David Kolb did a research about learning styles, he stated that everyone has his own personal learning style. His Learning Style Inventory consists of:- The converger / pragmatist: Peer feedback, activities that apply skills, self-directed autonomous learning. Their strength is the practical application of ideas.- The accommodator / Activist: practicing skills, problem solving, group discussions. Leave those students to determine their own criteria for the relevance of their study.- The assimilator / theorist: they like theory readings, thinking alone, they are often very good when it comes to creating ‏-‏theretical models.- The diverger / reflector: like lectures with reflection time, they often learn through reflective observation. Of course the idea is not to only provide education the student feels comfortable with. The child needs to learn and develop ‏-‏diferent learning styles through which the child understands the concept of learning. When it comes to the role of the teacher, the teacher knows about the different learning styles students have. They understand every child has his own comfort zone in ‏-‏learing, and that every child needs a different approach to make him develop in the best way possible.
Teachers who understand their students’ differences are able to differentiate in class, in a way they can adapt their teaching to the student. They plan their class corresponding to the students needs, they use possibilities which learning materials can offer and they use the lesson time in an optimal way. The learning ‏-‏peformance increase when knowing the students strengths and weaknesses. By knowing those the teacher can provide extra resources, theory or exercises for the strong learner. And on the contrary they can give extra attention or smaller exercises for ‏-‏chidren in need. Another option is to work with peer to peer learning, where students learn from each other.
