A big asset in education is the use of technology. It is important to
know that technology is a way to achieve a goal, and it’s not a goal
by itself. The use of technology opens doors when it comes to differentiation and teaching in a student centered way. Especially for
students with special educational needs the use of technology is a
blessing. There are four different ways to use technology in schools:
1. Software with a didactical function. This software takes over a
part of the educational process, like the use of PowerPoint, quizzes
or videos.
2. Software to search for information, for example Google.
3. Software with a creative function. This software can be used to
organize, correct or present information.
4. Software with a communicative function as Skype or school email.
When we look at students with a special educational need we can
see the possibilities technology can bring us. For example students
with dyslexia can use word processing software to write their story.
A child with ADHD that usually has a hard time with concentration
can use mind mapping tools to organize his ideas. And a child with
Autism that has a hard time understanding a story about the Greek
history can now understand history better, with the use of video.
Finally, the use of differentiation, technology and student based
learning is presenting a positive change in the education system that
we should impliment in order to help students learn in a comfortable
way and develop to be critical skillful thinkers who are ready for the
future.
