DID YOU KNOW ? The Muntapa Tunnel is the only tunnel in Queensland to pass beneath the crest of the Great Dividing Range . |
||
The Muntapa Tunnel between Oakey and Cooyar is one of our region ’ s historical , hidden treasures .
Built in 1910 , the 250 metre long Muntapa Tunnel – a key section of infrastructure of the broader Cooyar railway line – was built in response to growing demand from farmers for a more viable option to transport produce to market . Following the closure of the railway line in 1964 , a park was developed around the Muntapa Tunnel section , which provides a serene , seclude place for visitors to picnic and explore this unique historical site .
The park provides open space with a picnic table , gas barbecue , toilets and shelter . There is a track to take
|
you from the picnic area past the ‘ runs ’ ( sections of railway from the camp in the construction days ) and 30 metres into the tunnel .
The park is dotted with interpretive signs , which provide descriptions on the railway ’ s history .
Step back in time to marvel at this engineering feat and how it contributed to the lives of the region ’ s predecessors over a century ago . ■
When visiting the park please come adequately supplied with water , as there is no serviced water at the park .
