ing in the upcoming academic year. Traditionally, higher education institutions might assign one chair to undergraduate programs and one chair to graduate programs within a department. Starting with the new DNP and AGNP programs, the School of Nursing has divided the administrative labor by business model in order to better serve students and faculty. Hubbert and Schrader together have more than 30 years of experience in nursing education and administration. FIGURE ONE: RN-BS ONLINE/ DISTANCE COMPLETION TRACK FALL AND SPRING ENROLLMENT Schrader’s new role as chair of the RN-BS Online/Distance Completion, AGNP and DNP programs will be to manage the new degree programs using the self-support model. “The self -support model, or student revenue supported program which runs on fees generated from student enrollment, has enabled the program to grow and serve students in all parts of rural Idaho, as well as nationwide,” explained Schrader. Under Schrader’s leadership, the RN-BS online distance completion program has grown more than 300% over five years. “My leadership philosophy has been to always try to ‘do the right thing,’ Schrader explained. “ I have adopted three rules that I named ‘Leading by three S’s: Simplicity, Sensibility and Sustainability.” Hubbert will become the chair of the bachelor of science pre-licensure and master of science programs, overseeing the two programs that are currently funded by state-appropriated dollars. Hubbert, as chair of the traditional undergraduate and graduate programs, wants to encourage promising undergraduate students to continue on to the graduate program to pursue additional training and research opportunities. “The advantage of overseeing both the undergraduate and graduate programs is that it facilitates communication among myself, faculty and students, who are excited about the program and want to obtain a master’s degree to pursue research,” explained Hubbert. Hubbert cites a recent “Future of Nursing” report by the Institute of Medicine, which calls on nurses to seek higher levels of education and be able to act as full partners in the redesign efforts of the health care system. Nursing programs around the country have responded to the report by emphasizing to new students the importance of obtaining a bachelor’s degree and continuing on to graduate school. Boise State School of Nursing is pleased to help meet the needs for nursing in Idaho. BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY 5
