Innovation in Funding Models Allow School
of Nursing to Grow Despite Decrease in State
Support
The Boise State School of Nursing is continuing a model of selfsupport started by the Department of Respiratory Care to meet
strong student demand in the face of a continued decline in state
funding.
The innovative self-support model allows departments and schools at the university to create new
educational programs without state funding. For the past five years the School of Nursing has successfully operated the RN-BS Online/Distance Completion Track under this model. Figure one shows our
ability to serve students under this model with no state dollars. This year, the School of Nursing developed two new programs under the self-support model, the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree
and the adult-gerontology nurse practitioner (AGNP) program.
