Pro Bono Month
Each April, the firm comes together for Pro Bono Month, a firm-wide opportunity to step beyond our day-to-day practice and connect with the communities around us. Attorneys and paralegals are invited to pledge at least two hours of pro bono service or attend one clinic or training during the month. From expungement clinics to veterans’ legal advice to disaster-response preparation, the month offers something for everyone, and the response from our colleagues is always inspiring. This year’ s offerings included:
HVL LegalLines
Attorneys in our Houston office provided legal advice and information to Houston Volunteer Lawyers(“ HVL”) applicants by phone. The Houston Bar Association’ s LegalLines program connects volunteer attorneys with individuals seeking timely guidance on a range of legal issues.
Inner City Center Vital Documents Clinic
Our Los Angeles attorneys assisted homeless and precariously housed Angelenos in obtaining essential vital documents, including marriage and death records; court records; fee waivers and reductions for state ID cards and licenses; and documentation needed to secure identification, driver’ s licenses, or Social Security cards. Many individuals served through this clinic were impacted by the California wildfires.
HIAS-PA Green Card Clinic with PNC Bank
This clinic brought together Blank Rome attorneys and in-house volunteers from PNC Bank to assist refugees eligible to adjust their immigration status. Volunteers successfully prepared 12 green card applications on behalf of two families originally from Guatemala and Kyrgyzstan.
HAP SOAR Hybrid CLE
This continuing legal education(“ CLE”) session introduced attorneys to the Homeless Advocacy Project’ s(“ HAP”) SOAR program, an expedited Supplemental Security Income(“ SSI”) application process designed to improve approval rates for disabled individuals experiencing homelessness. Through this CLE, participants received practical guidance on representing clients through the SSI / SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery(“ SOAR”) program, equipping attorneys with the knowledge to support vulnerable populations in securing critical benefits and services.
PLSE Pardons Clinic
Attorneys firm-wide supported low-income Philadelphia residents during a virtual clinic. In partnership with Philadelphia Lawyers for Social Equity(“ PLSE”), attorneys worked directly with clients to prepare pardon applications for outdated criminal records that create barriers to personal, social, and career advancement.
HVL Veterans Advice Legal Clinic
Volunteer attorneys from our Houston office offered much-needed legal advice and counsel to veterans through inperson clinics held at Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
TVC Veterans Legal Clinic at VA Medical Center
This clinic, held in partnership with The Veterans Consortium(“ TVC”), gave our Washington, D. C., attorneys the opportunity to offer free, in-person legal guidance to veterans. Volunteers advised clients on a range of critical issues, including benefits, disability claims, housing, and family law, helping veterans access essential support and navigate complex legal challenges.
D. C. Bar Pro Bono Advice and Referral Clinic
Attorneys in our Washington, D. C., office assisted individuals without representation by offering guidance on a wide range of civil legal matters, including housing, family law, employment, consumer and debt issues, public benefits, health law, tax, probate, and SSI / Social Security Disability Insurance(“ SSDI”). Through brief services such as issue- spotting, document preparation, phone calls, letter drafting, and general legal advice, volunteers helped clients navigate immediate concerns and identify next steps.
