Riding • Confidently mount and unmount safely, under supervision, from the ground, a mounting block or a leg up, according to instructions
• Identify and communicate the effect and response of the horse during mounting, ridden exercise and dismounting
• Safely adjust stirrups and girths whilst maintaining control, standing still
• Adopt a balanced, suitable riding position, with secure lower leg, at walk, trot and canter
• Adjust and maintain an appropriate level of contact through the reins at walk, trot and canter to allow the horse to move forwards safely, at the required pace
• Use the neck strap to maintain optimum hand position and contact
• Use cues( pressure and release) effectively to ask a horse to walk, trot, canter and halt
• Walk and trot a quiet horse, safely in control in an open area including on the roads with company
• Change the rein in walk and trot, adopting the correct diagonal when working in a circle
• Canter a quiet horse in an enclosed space, in control, recognising the correct canter lead
• Adopt and maintain a consistent contact through the reins in walk, trot and canter
• Ride safely, in control, maintaining a safe distance from horses and people, avoiding known hazards in walk, trot and canter
• Maintain an appropriate length of stirrup and rein adapting to the situation, environment, hazards, demands of the activity and response of the horse
Tack & Equipment
• Prepare a horse for tacking up under supervision
• Minimise risk by tacking up correctly, according to instructions
• Put on and fit tack, with awareness of comfort and safety with supervision
• Carry out appropriate basic safety checks on tack and equipment
