Lauren Baker - Weatherbys International

I ’ m an International Business Master ’ s student at the University of Exeter . I have long aspired to pursue a career in the sports industry , with a particular focus on equine sports , a field that aligns perfectly with my lifelong passion for horses . My equestrian background is rooted in the eventing world , where I have actively participated as a volunteer , spectator , competitor , and retailer . These experiences have provided me with invaluable behind-the-scenes insights into the management and operation of horse events .
I applied for this programme to broaden my knowledge and engage more deeply with the horseracing industry , understanding the critical steps necessary for its success . By combining my academic background in business and sociology with my enthusiasm for equestrian sports , I ’ m eager to grow horse racing as a spectator sport by exploring business opportunities within the industry .

Horses have always been a huge part of my life ; despite not coming from an equine background , I have always found a way to surround myself with them . Following a degree in economics , I explored the racing industry as a value chain in my dissertation , sparking the idea to pursue a career in racing . From searching biweekly , I eventually discovered the programme , offering a variety of industry introductions . The HBLB placement in particular , combined both my academic strengths , as well as my personal passion for horses . From understanding the importance betting has on industry success , I ’ m excited to see all the intricate ways the revenue is injected back into the industry , encouraging both business and sport growth , and the development of the horses themselves . I ’ m curious also to learn how the introduction of affordability checks may impact the levy and ways in which they plan to work around them , while presented with the potential to produce my own ideas . This plays into my future ambitions .
I ’ d love to be able to use my economic knowledge , as well as love for horses , to ensure the industry continues to thrive . Personally , I ’ d like to keep developing the intricate combination of welfare and veterinary development , while also exploring new key areas betting revenue could cycled into . careersinracing . com
