The Role of AI in Education By : Hannah Ali and Megan Ginley

Introduction

It is important to understand that the world of education is constantly evolving . Whether it is a new curriculum that has been developed , a new style of teaching , or a new form of technology that can support teachers and learners . For the purpose of this article , the idea of Artificial Intelligence and the role it plays in education will be discussed . As educators , we want what is best for our students , and AI ( Artificial Intelligence ) can support teachers and students in many ways . The Office of Educational Technology released a handbook with insights and recommendations called Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Teaching and Learning in May of 2023 . It mentions , “ AI may improve a technology ’ s ability to meet students where they are , build on their strengths , and grow their knowledge and skills .” As the role of AI in education is further developed , it has showcased benefits in ELA , Mathematics , and Writing . In contrast , educators and students need to be aware of the risks that can arise . It is not something to be afraid of , just an additional aspect that needs to be addressed .

Basics & Benefits

What is something teachers always wish they had more of …. time ! With the advanced technology and support from AI in education , teachers can finally have some additional support that is so desperately needed . There are many ways AI can support learners in the classroom and , in parallel , assist teachers . For example , the Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Teaching and Learning Insights and Recommendations states that AI-powered capabilities include “ speech recognition to increase the support available to students with disabilities , multilingual learners , and others who could benefit from greater adaptivity and personalization in digital tools for learning ”( Office of Educational Technology , 2023 ). In addition educators and others are exploring the idea that AI can “ enable writing or improving lessons , as well as their process for finding , choosing , and adapting material for use in their lessons ”( Office of Educational Technology , 2023 ).

What is one thing all writers do once they have finished a piece ? Proofread , reread , or have another pair of eyes take a look at their work . AI can be that person that is instantly looking at your writing while you are working . AI can predict sentences you may want to write , giving you new words to use in your writing . It can check grammar as soon as the sentence is finished . It will provide alternative spellings , punctuation marks , or alternative placement of words . This kind of AI is simple to add to a web browser or is sometimes built into certain writing documents . Grammarly , Language tools , or Google Docs are all great tools that can help complete these tasks .
AI can be a tool for providing digital libraries for students . Students are then able to gain more access to a wider range of material than they originally were through just the books their school / teacher had . Teachers can use a digital library to make collections for students ' research papers or for when they are studying a certain time period of writing . Digital libraries can be used in any grade and other areas besides ELA . Some great resources that can be a digital library are Epic , InfoOhio , Bookshare , NEWS ELA , and many more .
