Middle School
Horror Genre in Year 6
Srishti Srivastava, Year 6
In Year 6, students have been studying about a
famous horror poet - Edgar Allan Poe. They
have read two amazing stories and two poems
written by Poe called The Tell Tale Heart, The
Cask of Amontillado, The Raven and Annabel
Lee.
For The Tell Tale Heart, they made mood
drawing that represented what they learned and
understood from the story. It also reflected what
came to mind when reading the story. For The
Cask of Amontillado, they answered questions
from the book and recreated the plot summary.
For the questions, they worked in three’s,
following Ms Katie’s instructions.
For The Raven, Ms Kam directed us to explore
the possible meanings of the poem and writer’s
intentions. It started with questions and
predictions prior to reading The Raven and
guesses on what the poem might be about. The
following activities included analysing the poem
and poetic devices used for effects. Students
worked in three’s and individually wrote about
the poem’s themes.
They also had a horror story (circle) time in
pyjamas. They had a lot of fun and they told
horror stories to each other; some of them were
so scared and some were scaring other people.
They had a blast studying about Poe’s
horrifying yet awesome stories and poems.
