Stand UP: Human Rights and The Global Refugee Crisis, BCC 347
Arriving from working with Syrian refugees the morning of IC’s start (yes, really), join activists,
humanitarians, policy makers and a high school student that have all been leaping amongst
Mediterranean islands, European border camps and North America working to educate about the
refugee crisis and motivate support around the world to help respond to the greatest migration
of populations in human history. As Jews, we have a special responsibility to care for others in
need and especially for those now strangers in a new land. Learn what you can do to rally support
for the most vulnerable seeking a better life far from conflict, persecution and famine. You’ll even
have the chance to speak directly to peer refugees in the middle of their journey.
Facilitators: Ammar, Teen Iraqi Refugee Activist (Live from Vienna, Austria); Ruben Chandrasekar,
Executive Director, International Rescue Committee – Baltimore Office; Faiza, Teen Syrian Refugee
Activist; Gracen Hecht, Sangham Foundation; Bethany Heinrich, VP of Content and Community,

Stand UP: Homelessness, Hunger and Poverty, Paca
Homelessness, hunger and poverty affect our communities on a global scale. In this track, hear
from leaders working to address these challenges on an international scope as well as on cityspecific levels with an emphasis on the Baltimore community. You’ll better understand the school
to prison pipeline, how the city responds to the thousands of people experiencing homelessness
each year and the institutional hurdles that impact the working class of the city. Once informed,
you’ll leap into action and spend time helping with direct service organizations like the
300MenMarch, Kids Safe Zone and Flight 1 Carriers to learn ways you can replicate important acts
of service in your home communities.
Facilitators: Shonte Drake, Chief of Special Projects from Baltimore City Department of Public
Works; Jeremy Eldridge, Former ASA and current Principal, Eldridge and Nachtman; Mitch
Liebeskind, Program and Outreach Coordinator, Yachad, Inc.; Sarah Rosky, Mazon; Rachel
Steinberg, Project Leader, U.S. Fund for UNICEF
Stand UP: LGBTQ Inclusion, BCC 349
Join Keshet, the national grassroots organization working for the full equality and inclusion of
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Jews in Jewish life, as we cultivate our practice of inclusion
in all parts of BBYO. Learn the skills necessary to speak out against homophobia, both in public
and private, while exploring the ways you can change our communities for the better. You’ll use
real-life scenarios to create strategies to effectively bring about change.
Facilitators: Idit Klein, Executive Director, Keshet; Geena Rocero, Transgender Model and
Advocate; Justin Rosen Smolen, National Director of Youth Programs, Keshet
