Inspired by gardens with borrowed landscapes and long-reaching plots , I aimed to create a versatile space that frames beauty both beyond and within the border , offering a sense of ease and possibility . With year-round bright colours , summer-to-autumn berries , and contrasting textures , it ’ s a space to share imagination , indulge in adventure , and unwind with nature . Pick fruit with friends , paint the view through the moon gate , or stretch out in the sun — a sanctuary for every mood and whim .
A Haven for All
Designer : Jemma Elcock
A little oasis offering beauty for human visitors and resources for wildlife . The arbour seat includes bug houses , bird boxes , hedgehog and amphibian nooks , and the pond supports aquatic life with wetland plants . A natural path with hardy plants is adorned with rich pink and purple spikes , bright green accents , and showy peach / orange flowers . Native flowers , seed-heads , and foliage provide year-round interest , complemented by a crafted fence and bird feeder .

Common Ground

In 2021 , Grand Union adopted a stretch of canalside land in Digbeth , naming it Common Field . Despite containing toxic heavy metals like lead and arsenic , life flourishes here . Disturbed soil brings campion and celandine to life , nettles host caterpillars , and clover , willowherb , and achillea attract pollinators . We ’ ve added experimental phytoremediators : sunflowers , mustard greens , water crowfoot , and red fescue to help restore the soil .

Our Safe Haven

Designed as a safe haven for anyone in need of a peaceful spot to stop , breathe , and take in nature . A short sensory lavender path grazes your ankles as you meander through bright , colourful plantings of pollinator-friendly plants and flowers . At the centre , you ’ ll find a beautiful handmade bench in front of a tranquil woodland . While sitting , you ’ ll hear the buzzing of bees , see butterflies fluttering , and smell lavender in the air – “ our safe haven .”
