AUTHORIZATION TO PRACTICE TELEDENTISTRY DURING CORONAVIRUS EMERGENCY
Health care professionals licensed under any of the Department of State ' s Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs ( BPOA ) licensing boards can provide services to patients via telemedicine and teledentistry during the coronavirus emergency .
Currently , no Pennsylvania law prohibits the practice of telemedicine .
All practitioners using telemedicine in Pennsylvania must remain informed on all federal and state laws , regulations and guidance regarding telemedicine , including a practitioner ' s obligations under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act ( HIPAA ) and recent guidance provided by the U . S . Department of Health and Human Services .
DEA PROVIDES GUIDANCE ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE SUPPLIES
On March 16 , the Drug Enforcement Agency ( DEA ) published a COVID-19 Information Page on the Diversion Control Divisions Web Site . This page contains important guidance concerning COVID-19 and the national drug supply , electronic prescribing of controlled substances , telemedicine , medicated assisted treatment , quota , contact information , and other important federal and state information .
ELECTRONIC PRESCRIBING OF CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES
Act 96 of 2018 contains exceptions for prescribers who are unable to meet electronic prescribing requirements due to the COVID-19 response .
Prescribers who reasonably determine that electronically prescribing controlled substance would be impractical or cause an untimely delay resulting in an adverse impact on the patient ' s medical condition meets a statutory exception from the electronic prescribing requirements of Act 96 .
