3. How did the label start out?
Started as a project at University, I always wanted to have my own label in the real world, so when I finished University, I managed to gain funding from The Prince Youth Trust and started the label.
4. Which artist(s) were you really pleased to sign to Natural Essence Media and which releases have been the most successful so far? (Either sales wise or fan/review sites)
Its been an interesting journey and we have worked with a number of very talented artists. I personally am pleased with signing every artist on our label, they all work hard at perfecting their skills and making great music. Highlights for me would be having artists like Demarkus Lewis, Phase Dee, MKTL, Daz I Kue, Donovan Blackwood and Ki Ki Hawkins ,Expanded People, Brazilian Soul Crew feature on the label. We have a lot of artists that are breaking through, ones to watch for me are Bluesoil, SOL Element & Dimi Stuff, Kev Kruz, Anthony Poteat, Elias Tzikas and DJ E-Clyps.
5. What do you believe is the secret to success as a producer?
I truly believe some people are gifted with a natural ability to make music, but this is not always enough - You need to understand as much as you can about the process of making music from learning any instrument to mastering and the business side of things too. I find artists and producers that are open to learning new skills and are able to adapt to the ever changing landscape of the music business, are the ones that make most progress. Lastly never lose your love for what you do, it will definitely see you through the ups and downs of this business.
6. Any advice for the aspiring producers out there?
Work hard on developing your skills on a daily basis and learn to play an instrument. Believe in yourself and your music even if others don't. Most of all never give up!
7. We hear that the label also has a radio show?
We syndicate a weekly show to many radio stations around the world, the show can be heard on QH Radio, WTC House Radio, Posh FM, Gotta Have House Radio, to name a few. We have had a number of guest on the show over the years including Kathy Brown,Chanelle, and our monthly resident Kev Kruz form Mecca Digital Hi-Fi in New York. We have upcoming shows from two talented South African artists, Tebza Inner-Deep and Vil Cazi during December. It works well as a platform for our artist to promote themselves and their work.
