AV News 200 - May 2015
Following the presentation of each award, the judges explained why they liked
that particular sequence. Among the factors that had influenced their decisions
were overall structure and editing, the quality of the photography (including any
post-processing), and a well constructed and balanced soundtrack. They were
looking for creativity and imagination, with the ability to engage and convince the
viewer and/or generate an emotion. They also pointed out the importance of
pace and progression in a sequence, with time to study and enjoy images where
appropriate.
In the documentaries they highlighted the need for sufficient factual
information to make them interesting, but not too much. As with any form of
comedy, they stressed the importance of timing in humorous productions. Subtle
changes in music and the use of sound effects to suggest or augment a mood or
event were also commended, as well as the clear and clean delivery of a
commentary that could be heard above any other sounds.
In summing up, the judges said that they thought that the overall standard was
very good, but that the major awards had gone to sequences that had that 'little
bit of magic'. They also thanked the organisers for taking such good care of them
throughout the day, allowing them to concentrate on the task in hand.
Certificates of participation were then presented to all the remaining authors.
There followed votes of thanks to the judges, and to the Chairman and
committee of the Essex AV Group, which were heartily endorsed by all those
present. Once again, the event had been run in a very professional manner, and
was a great success. The 24th East Anglian AV Competition will take place at
the same venue on Saturday 19th March 2016 - pop it in your diary!
