AV News 200 - May 2015 Raymond Hughes LRPS N IP A A V F e s tiv a l The Northern Ireland Photographic Association AV Festival was held on 13th /14th February 2015 at The Courtyard Theatre, Ballyearl. We were delighted to have our esteemed AV News editors Jill and John as judges. This was the first time that they had visited with us in Northern Ireland so it was important that we made a good impression (don't want a bad review in AV News, do we?) but being Friday 13th it just had to happen, CRASH went the Festival computer with 2 hours to go. A quick substitution and it was over to Jill and John who entertained the Newtownabbey Mayor and the sizeable Friday evening audience with a selection of their work and the much anticipated appearance of Little Ted and friends. A 2a.m. session on the laptop by the Tech Team to sort the problems and the Competitions with a record entry started on time, Saturday morning. We do like to work our judges, so Jill and John had Novice, NIPA Open (N. Ireland club members only), All Ireland (including IPF club members), Inter Federation competition and Special categori es to select. Wow! They got straight to work and made constructive comments after each of the Novice entries which were much appreciated by the novices. Their deliberations resulted in Brian Hennessey's sequence 'Resurrection' a sequence in mono and colour showing the renewal of a new church building from the ruins of the old church, winning the Novice Tray. Mark Allen's 'Iceland' a dramatic picture and music sequence without commentary featuring colour and mono images of Iceland was judged the top NIPA sequence winning the 'Open' competition and PAGB Gold medal. 'Iceland' also won the Inter-federation Neil Marshall Medal. Mark Allen (left) Receiving the Trophy from NIPA President Martin Spackman 'The Open Box' by James Hamill ARPS won the PAGB Silver medal and also the audience vote. A beautiful sequence featuring original images of the aftermath of WW1, taken by the Uncle of his local minister. Lilian Webb IPF Vice-President presenting James Hamill with the Audience Vote Page 14
