AV News 183 - February 2011 East Midlands AV Day Brian Jeffs FRPS DPAGB A group of 47 AV'ers were in attendance for this event on Sunday 31st October 2010, Howard Bagshaw, Keith and Kate Brown being the guest lecturers. After the normal cup of tea the day began with the attendees sequences and five people had offered their work for assessment by the assembled audience. This I have always felt is the major part of any AV Day. The comments from Howard, Keith, Kate and others in the audience were all very constructive and encouraging. We were left with idea's and new techniques to try on our next masterpiece. After Lunch it was the turn of Howard Bagshaw ARPS DPAGB to enlighten us. He began by saying that although he has been a keen photographer all his life, he only started to make AV's seriously since retiring a couple or so years ago. For Howard the story or message that the AV portrays is most important. And this was eloquently demonstrated in his talk which included not just his awarding winning sequences 'Migrant Mother' and 'Tough Guy Challenge', but also his technique with blending the images and music. Another tea break and a chance for everyone to chat, before we settled down to be entertained by Keith Brown FRPS FIPF EFIAP MPAGB APAGB and Kate Brown LRPS DPAGB. Their lecture entitled 'and then there were two' began with Kate, like Howard a relative new-comer to AV, showing a selection of her own sequences which were all very personal from the heart. Even their two sons, Alex and Sam had sequences shown during the presentation. Keith, with over 30 years experience in AV, ended the day by showing his award winning sequence 'The Quiet One'. He also manually projected images from the sequence and explained his thoughts behind their selection. Another great East Midlands AV Day had come to an end and as I told the audience my final AV day. Yes after 24 years and 30 events its time for me to retire from being the AV Group's Midland Area Organiser and hand the baton on (I hope!) to someone else. My first event was held on 25th October 1987, the lecturers being John Dawkins, Irene and Peter Clarke. Of the 56 people present that day, 9 were also in attendance this year, so I'm not the only one in this area to have been involved in AV for many many years. We would like to thank Brian for all the effort he has put in over the years to make these days so successful. We hope that someone will take up the reins and continue to organise these very enjoyable days.
