I am encouraged by his statement that my Variations "was one of a very small
number of sequences which gained no votes at all." It reveals that there are
indeed many sequences other than the winning three, that gain at least one
first, second or third vote. Why does Howard want to keep this information
secret? Following Howard's example perhaps I can reveal some results of my
own. In the Great Northern of 2004 I included "White and a little bit more" by
Dianne Owen in my top three. Similarly in 2005 "Missing" by Mike Kersting.
Neither of these sequences received any other award.
The authors of these sequences might like to write in and let us know
whether being aware of my vote would have been encouraging, or whether
the opinion of someone with so many shortcomings is of no significance.
