Dig!Fects
Howard Wilson
First of all, thank you for volunteering to edit AV News. Where would this
world be without volunteers?
Received my copy this morning and enjoying the read as usual. I have
read Mike Woolnough's article on Dig!fects with great interest. (Issue 173
Page 32) I am relatively new to digital AV and the idea of a software slider
hand control appeals to me greatly. I have tried seaching the web to find
anything about the programme, but have drawn a complete blank. Please, do
you, Mike or anyone else have any more details about this programme?
Secondly, a question, prompted by Suzanne Walker's really helpful article
about re-sizing and cropping images. (Issue 173 Page 24) Why, when we
have taken our pictures on an expensive SLR, in 3x2 format, do 'AVers' then
crop to 4x3? We all got on very well with 35mm, in 3x2 format. (Film at 10p
or more per frame made us careful to compose properly as masking down
was not very easy). Almost all new TVs are widescreen. Yet these workers
are reverting to the old TV format. I am intrigued.
Zoom H4
Peter Appleton
Congratulations on your appointment as editors and on the creation of the
website www.avnews.org.uk I am writing to offer the following suggestion:
I met Howard Gregory a couple of years ago at Snods Edge and had the
pleasure of hearing his teachings about sound recording. I have been
following his writings in the AV News with interest and believe there is
another option when tackling the sound recordings. I use a Zoom H4 and I
am very impressed with its capabilities. What I propose is to prepare a short
demonstration of its capabilities and you can upload the resultant MP3 file to
your website. I see this serving several purposes:
- It would continue the discussion about soundtrack recordings
- It would provide hard evidence of the quality that can be easily achieved
with this particular unit (and no doubt with other similar units)
- It would enable you to indicate some of the new options that will be open
to the subscribers and readers of AV News as a result of having the
dedicated website. See Page 44 for Peters article on the Zoom H4
Vote for the Audience Vote
Andrew Chadwick
Howard Gregory wonders whether I might be "...just a teeny bit annoyed" that
he has "laid bare my shortcomings for all to see" by revealing that the last two
sequences I entered in the Great Northern competition did not receive a large
number of audience votes. In fact one and none respectively if Howard's
figures are accurate. I am not annoyed, just disappointed that Howard is still
suggesting that this implies that the sequences were "close to bottom".
