DAY 1 Sydney / Blue Mountains
Collect your hire car and head two hours westwards to the Blue Mountains , a World Heritage listed wilderness where ancient rock formations cast their golden glow over vast canyons carpeted in eucalypts . Here you ’ ll find adventure activities aplenty as well as quaint , historic towns and villages where you can indulge in a lazy lunch or two .
DAY 2 Blue Mountains
At leisure to explore as you choose . A good starting point is to head for the Echo Point Lookout , which is one of the best spots for viewing the area ’ s most famous rock formation , the Three Sisters . It ’ s also the starting point for many great walks . When it comes to meandering around the mountains , there are 87 miles of tracks to choose , so there ’ s definitely a bush walk to suit everyone . Perhaps climb down to the valley floor and up along rugged escarpments where you will find waterfalls along with breathtaking views .
At Scenic World in Katoomba enjoy a range of experiences : Scenic Railway , the world ’ s steepest passenger railway ; Scenic Skyway , where you glide between cliff tops on a glass-floored cable car suspended above ancient ravines ; the Scenic Cableway , which gently descends into the Jamieson Valley ; and the Scenic Walkway , an elevated boardwalk under the canopy of the extraordinary temperate rainforest .
Other attractions include the world ’ s oldest cave system at Jenolan . Embark on a tour into the depths of the caves to discover the unspoiled underworld of stunning crystal formations and pure underground rivers . At Mount Tomah visit the Botanic Gardens , which features thousands of plants from the southern hemisphere and around the world .
The charm of the Blue Mountains goes beyond its natural wonders . Make sure you allow time to visit the quiet mountain towns of Katoomba , Leura and Blackheath to find beautiful street art , antique shops , museums , cultural centres and cosy cafés with friendly locals .
