Back to School and New Cell Phone Policy
The halls of Sugar Valley Rural Charter School will soon be buzzing with excitement as students return for the first day of school on August 19th. A new school year brings fresh opportunities, new friendships, exciting learning experiences, and plenty of adventures waiting to unfold.
This year, students will notice many new faces throughout the building, including new classmates, teachers, and staff members who are eager to become part of the SVRCS family. While the start of a new school year can be exciting, it can also bring feelings of nervousness or uncertainty.
One of the best ways students can prepare for a successful year is by developing positive habits before classes begin. Getting back into a regular sleep schedule, organizing school supplies, and setting goals for the year can help students feel more confident and ready to learn. Students can also mentally prepare for the first day by remembering a few important things:
• It is okay to feel nervous about meeting new people or starting new classes.
• Everyone is adjusting to a new school year together, including teachers.
• Asking questions is a sign of strength, not weakness.
• Mistakes are part of learning and growing.
• Building friendships takes time, and a simple smile or greeting can be the start of a new connection.
At SVRCS, we encourage students to seek help whenever they need it. Whether a student is struggling with an assignment, feeling overwhelmed, or simply unsure where to go, there are teachers, counselors, administrators, and staff members ready to help. Reaching out early can prevent small concerns from becoming larger challenges later in the year. As academic expectations increase throughout the school year, establishing help-seeking habits from the beginning is one of the most valuable skills students can develop. Asking for clarification, attending extra help sessions, communicating with teachers, and talking with trusted adults are all important steps toward success.
Another important way students can prepare for the upcoming school year is by becoming familiar with our new cell phone policy. Beginning this school year, students will be required to keep cell phones stored in their lockers or backpacks. Cell phone use will not be permitted at any time during school hours. While this adjustment may take some time to get used to, the goal of the policy is to help students stay focused, engaged, and connected to the learning taking place in their classrooms. Research has shown that limiting distractions can improve concentration, academic performance, and face-to-face social interactions among students. Students can prepare for this by practicing healthy technology habits before school begins. Consider limiting phone use during homework, meals, family activities, or other designated times throughout the day. Building these habits now can make the transition smoother when classes begin.
A new school year is a chance for a fresh beginning. Approaching the year with a positive attitude, healthy habits, and a willingness to ask for help when needed, students can set themselves up for a rewarding experience. We look forward to welcoming everyone back and making this school year the best one yet!
