A cord can be a symbol for the emotional and metaphysical cords that connect us to other people. A cord can be used to gather energy and protect something or someone. A knot tied in a cord can store energy, or connect two things together.

Cord Magick for Love

Perhaps the most well-known form of cord magick is “tying the knot.” That’s right, this slang expression for getting married comes from the tradition of hand-fasting where the couple’s hands are literally tied together during the marriage ceremony. The knotted cord is removed with the knots intact and kept in a special place in the home. Should the couple ever want to separate, or hand-part, they will untie the knots to release the energy that holds them together.

Energetic cords exist between people. Sometimes those cords are no longer helpful. Sometimes we have a hard time letting go of a failed relationship. In this case a cord-cutting ritual is in order. To perform this ritual simply take a photo of the person, or a piece of paper with their name on it, and tie it to one end of a cord. On the other end tie a photo of you, or a paper with your name. Cut the cord in the middle, or burn it with a candle. This will release the energy that connects you to this person. Dispose of the two cords separately, by burning or burying in separate places, if possible.

Cord Magick for Groups

Covens, family groups and business partners sometimes use cord magick to strengthen and protect their group energy. While sitting in a circle they pass a cord around. Each person loops the cord around their wrist, so the group is connected one to another. When the cord makes its way completely around the circle they knot it to make the connection whole. When they leave the circle the knotted cord stays intact and the energy of the group is sealed within it.
